Yellow sapphire can only be scratched by materials that are of equal or higher hardness. Diamond might scratch a sapphire for example.
Sapphire is tough, which prevents it from breaking easily.
Colour
When people say yellow sapphire they usually mean the blue variant. Sapphire belongs to the family of corundum stones. Corundum occurs in many different colours, including the colour yellow. Sapphire’s yellow colour is caused by a combination of aluminium and … in the stone. With differently coloured sapphires, the stones are made up of different materials.
In addition to the beautiful yellow sapphire, the range of precious stones offered by DiamondsByMe also includes blue and pink sapphires.
Origin & History
Yellow sapphires are most commonly found in:
Australia; Cambodia; India, Kashmir; Myanmar; Sri Lanka; Thailand; the USA, Montana.
Blue sapphire used to be known as a precious stone that helped protect chastity and tracked down fraud and tragedy. Furthermore it was said to protect its wearer against poison, the plague, fever and even skin-related disease.
Care
General care for a yellow sapphire
A sapphire, like a ruby, is generally resistant to dents and liquids. We do, however, recommend to take extra care not to damage this valuable precious stone.
Imitations
Whereas yellow sapphire and ruby are generally comparable, they remain so when it comes to their imitations. When creating imitation sapphires, just like in creating imitation rubies, many different materials may be used, the main difference being colour. For example: blue glass, blue tourmaline, blue spinel.
A quality sapphire may be recognized by its intense colour and lack of impurities. The quality stone is clear and displays an intense blue colour and a lively shimmer.
Cut
Yellow sapphires may appear in any number of cuts. The most common cut for sapphires is a round faceted cut. In addition to this cut, however, there are many more options ranging from oval facetted cuts to cabochons with a star-like effect in the stone.
